ART HISTORY COURSES
Women and War:
Feminine Resilience, Resistance, and Reinvention
Explore the resilience and creativity of women artists during times of War.
War and its representation have long been dominated by men, with museum walls and historical narratives exalting the exploits of male soldiers, generals, and leaders. Yet behind these stories lies a quieter, often overlooked narrative—one of women whose lives, art, and legacies were shaped by the upheavals of war. This dynamic course sheds light on the powerful ways women have responded to, resisted, and redefined their roles in the context of conflict, offering a fresh perspective on art, history, and resilience.
Rediscovering Women’s Roles in Art and Conflict
This course dives into the experiences of 20th-century women artists, as well as women meaningfully connected to artists, whose creativity became a powerful means of resistance and self-expression during times of war. Through the lens of artists like Roberta González, Tamara de Lempicka, and Remedios Varo, alongside figures like Dina Vierny and Peggy Guggenheim, we'll uncover stories of women who overcame extraordinary challenges—displacement, political persecution, and personal loss—while creating or collecting works of enduring impact. Their art and lives are not only testimonies to the hardships of war but also bold assertions of agency in a male-dominated world.

Whether through the elegance of Art Deco, the imaginative escape of surrealism, or the raw rebellion of street art, these women defied societal expectations and used their creativity as a form of resistance. Their stories serve as a reminder of the enduring power of art to confront oppression and to inspire change.
